Emmy Predictions: Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Connie Britton, Claire Danes, Michelle Dockery, Vera Farmiga, Elisabeth Moss, Kerry Washington, Robin Wright

The competition: Last year, only three out of seven nominees were returning. This year, it may not change all that much, but let’s start with the most vulnerable contenders. Connie Britton (Nashville) has a good Emmy track record, but her show is far from the most solid on television, and it’s very likely she won’t return. Both Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey) and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) are on shows whose Emmy affection won’t last forever, and may even expire this year. Two-time defending champ Claire Danes (Homeland) was snubbed by Golden Globe voters following a heavily uneven third season, and could face the same fate here. The complication is that two past nominees, Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) and Mariska Hargitay (Law and Order: SVU), may be able to stage comebacks following high-profile seasons. Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Kerry Washington (Scandal), and Robin Wright (House of Cards) should be fine, and the question is, who will join them? I’d love to see either Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex) or Diane Kruger (The Bridge), and it might be Keri Russell (The Americans), who missed out on a nomination last year. I’ll go crazy if someone else in the same boat gets snubbed again, and that’s the incomparable Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black).

The predicted nominees: Vera Farmiga, Julianna Margulies, Tatiana Maslany, Elisabeth Moss, Kerry Washington, Robin Wright

The predicted winner: Wright
