Emmy Predictions: Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series
The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Hugh Bonneville, Bryan Cranston, Jeff Daniels, Jon Hamm, Damian Lewis, Kevin Spacey
The competition: Theoretically, this lineup could be exactly the same this year. But there are a few factors to consider. First, it’s hard to consider Damian Lewis (Homeland) a lead for the show’s third season, and the Golden Globes snubbed Lewis and his entire show after a win the year before. Though he won last year, Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom) might be snubbed because of backlash against the show in its second season, as well as the fact that the series will be ending shortly after its third season. I’m also not convinced that Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) will continue to benefit from the love voters have for his show, and I was surprised that he even made the cut last year. Additionally, though Jon Hamm (Mad Men) is still terrific, viewer enthusiasm seems to have gone down, and he might find himself snubbed. I have a sneaking suspicion that Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) will be a shocking omission, mostly because the actor has failed to take home accolades despite nominations from a number of guilds, and I think that praise for the show will go instead to Golden Globe-winning costar Robin Wright. That could leave Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) as the sole returning nominee, and the frontrunner to win given the undying adoration everyone seems to have for his show (plus, he’s a three-time winner). There are three Golden Globe nominees who could benefit from a potentially open field: Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex), and Emmy favorite James Spader (The Blacklist). I’m pulling for a contender that didn’t make that shortlist: Demian Bichir (The Bridge). Keep an eye out for those who missed out last year but could appear this year: Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), and Matthew Rhys (The Americans). More likely to make the cut, however, are two movie stars returning to television for a highly acclaimed HBO production: Woody Harrelson (True Detective) and newly minted Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey (True Detective).
The predicted nominees: Bryan Cranston, Jon Hamm, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Michael Sheen, Kevin Spacey
The predicted winner: McConaughey
