Emmy Predictions: Best Directing for a Comedy Series

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: On All Fours (Girls), Diva (Glee), New Year’s Eve (Louie), Arrested (Modern Family), Hogcock/Last Lunch (30 Rock)

The competition: Let’s look at last year’s nominees and presume that things might play out similarly this year. Elevator, Part 6, the one “Louie” episode entered, is in. Beach House or Two Plane Rides are the best bets for “Girls,” and 100 seems like an easy choice if voters insist on continuing to honor “Glee.” Australia or The Wedding, Part 2 are the likeliest choices for “Modern Family.” After that, things get interesting, since some returning shows, like “Parks and Recreation” and “Veep,” could finally earn recognition with episodes like London and Moving Up for the former and Alicia and Crate for the latter. Look out for a swan song for Last Forever and “How I Met Your Mother,” and keep an eye on new shows “Alpha House,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Derek,” “Looking,” and “Silicon Valley” to place for their pilots. “Orange is the New Black” is a surefire contender for Can’t Fix Crazy or Lesbian Request Denied, and I’d love to see the always ignored “Shameless” pop up in its first ever year of eligibility in this category for Iron City.

The predicted nominees: Last Forever (How I Met Your Mother), Elevator, Part 6 (Louie), The Wedding, Part 2 (Modern Family), Can’t Fix Crazy (Orange is the New Black), Lesbian Request Denied (Orange is the New Black)

The predicted winner: “Last Forever”
