Emmy Predictions: Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Alec Baldwin, Jason Bateman, Louis C.K., Don Cheadle, Matt LeBlanc, Jim Parsons

The competition: Two slots are definitely open since Baldwin and Bateman’s shows didn’t air this past season. There’s no way that Louis C.K. (Louie) or Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) are going anywhere, and I certainly hope that Matt LeBlanc (Episodes) isn’t either. Don Cheadle (House of Lies) could go either way. The field otherwise is wide open, and I would be thrilled to see William H. Macy (Shameless) finally get some recognition for his magnificent performance now that the show is officially considered a comedy instead of a drama. Likely to earn a spot is Golden Globe winner Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) if voters feel the same way about his humor, and past champs Michael J. Fox (The Michael J. Fox Show) and Robin Williams (The Crazy Ones) could return for their new short-lived efforts. Danny McBride (Eastbound and Down) or Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) could appeal to voters for their final seasons, and maybe Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation) could too in advance of his show’s swan song. Past nominee Will Arnett (The Millers) has a new show for which to contend, and Jonathan Groff (Looking) and Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) could earn their first-ever nominations. Then there are two past winners, Ricky Gervais (Derek) and John Goodman (Alpha House), who are now in the running for online series that may or may not be able to break into this race.

The predicted nominees: Louis C.K., Don Cheadle, Matt LeBlanc, William H. Macy, Jim Parsons, Andy Samberg

The predicted winner: Louis C.K.
