Emmy Predictions: Best Directing for a Drama Series

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Margate Sands (Boardwalk Empire), Gliding Over All (Breaking Bad), Episode 4 (Downton Abbey), Q and A (Homeland), Chapter 1 (House of Cards)

The competition: It’s very feasible that all five of these shows could be nominated again, but I’m not entirely convinced that the season finale of “Boardwalk Empire” or any episode of “Homeland” will place. I do expect that Felina, the series finale of “Breaking Bad,” will be present, as well as at least one other episode. The Watchers on the Wall seems like a shoo-in for “Game of Thrones,” and Episode 1, the lone submission of “Downton Abbey,” might trump Chapter 26, the likeliest among a number of “House of Cards” installments entered. In terms of pilots, I think that “Masters of Sex” has the edge over “The Bridge,” “Ray Donovan,” and “Turn,” and the one episode of “True Detective” submitted, Who Goes There has a strong shot too. Don’t count out Time Zones and Waterloo, the season premiere and finale of “Mad Men,” or the one episode selected for the incomparably awesome “Orphan Black,” Governed by Sound Reason and True Religion.

The predicted nominees: Felina (Breaking Bad), Ozymandias (Breaking Bad), The Watchers on the Wall (Game of Thrones), Pilot (Masters of Sex), Who Goes There (True Detective)

The predicted winner: “Felina”
