Emmy Predictions: Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 10th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Laura Dern, Lena Dunham, Edie Falco, Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Amy Poehler

The competition: Count two people out this year because their shows are no longer on the air: Dern and Fey. Don’t even think that Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) are going anywhere, and I see no reason why Lena Dunham (Girls) and Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) would either given Emmy voters’ enduring affection for them. There are three former nominees who could sneak into the last two slots - Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly), or Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope), but I think some new blood will make it in instead. Now that she’s in the comedy race instead of the drama category, Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black) should have an easy time getting nominated, and Emmy Rossum (Shameless) might too. If not, look out for two more traditional comedy leading ladies: Anna Faris (Mom) and Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project).

The predicted nominees: Lena Dunham, Edie Falco, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Amy Poehler, Emmy Rossum, Taylor Schilling

The predicted winner: Poehler
