What I’m Watching: The Walking Dead (Mid-Season Finale)
The Walking Dead: Season 6, Episode 8 “Start to Finish” (B-)
Another eight episodes of this show and another cyclical arc traveled. I’m not sure why, but I’ve lost interest in a lot of what is going on on this show. The town of Alexandria was intriguing from the start but never quite as much as the Governor’s city or Hershel’s house, probably because it was so big and the most compelling part of it was its inevitable downfall. This episode actually didn’t feature much in the way of human threats, but instead the walkers getting into town after the tower collapsed, putting everyone in jeopardy. None of the scenes, even Deanna inching ever closer to her death, were particularly memorable, and it’s disappointing not to feel energized as this show signs off for the next two months before returning as usual in February. The one exception was the final scene and the plotline preceding it, predicated around Morgan’s inherent belief in the goodness of people and Denise’s kind nature, which compelled her to treat Alpha Wolf even though she knew he was a bad man, and later prompted her to beg him not to be what everyone said he was when he managed to get the upper hand. I like Denise and Merritt Wever, and I hope we see her again, but I’m not optimistic. It’s hard enough to see the regular characters on this show given how infrequently they appear, and to me that’s a weakness of this show at this point, making me less excited but obviously not close enough to giving up on it.
Season grade so far: B
Season MVP: Lennie James as Morgan
