Take Three: Easy

Easy: Season 1, Episode 3 “Brewery Brothers” (C+)

This was definitely the least engaging installment so far, and there’s one simple reason for that: it wasn’t about a romantic relationship. Sure, there was a couple expecting a baby with different priorities and senses of where they should be spending their time. But the title references the Brewery Brothers, and watching a few guys start an illegal brewery in their garage isn’t really worth the price of admission. I was happy to recognize a number of cast members, but I don’t feel that they were used to their true potential. The most significant example is Aya Cash of “You’re the Worst,” who had the chance to yell at the guys for being stupid and at her husband for forgetting his responsibilities, but otherwise was wasted since it was a relatively tame performance. Zazie Beetz, currently starring as Van on “Atlanta,” Was pretty good in her role as the lone female of the operation who later bonded with Cash’s slighted spouse. Shortly after I watched this episode, I saw Evan Jonigkeit, who played Matt, waiting outside the premiere of his new film “The Lennon Report,” and I recognize him from a few projects such as “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” but otherwise don’t find him too memorable. And this wasn’t a great showcase for Dave Franco either since he didn’t get a chance to channel his signature energy. Let’s hope for better things in episode four – there was plenty of talent here and the most disappointing setup so far that didn’t take advantage of netting any of them.
