What I’m Watching: You’re the Worst

You’re the Worst: Season 3, Episode 6 “The Last Sunday Funday” (B+)

This was a silly episode in a lot of ways, but it was also thoroughly engaging and got all of the characters involved in doing something therapeutic. Gretchen wanting to save Sunday Funday by finding a speakeasy didn’t seem too enticing to anyone, but eventually they all got really into it. It’s easy to forget that Jimmy, for all his immoral behavior, is actually the only intellectual one in the group, and his disbelief at the fact that no one had a clue what the Dewey Decimal System was served as a hilarious introduction to the episode. Going to the library, finding Sam, who knows what ragtime is but is frightened by puzzles and general trickery, and then eventually sitting on a toilet in a jail cell that rotates to provide entrance into a speakeasy that charges $21 for a drink was a wild ride that only this show could provide. I like that Gretchen started losing patience for Lindsay and her whining about Paul, which ultimately led Lindsay to finally share her feelings and ask Paul if she could sleep with other men, something he consented to because he truly does love her. Their childish fights were pretty epic, highlighted by Lindsay grabbing Gretchen’s ice cream scoop right off the cone and then placing it back down. Edgar mellowing out and delighting in his ability to remain calm while fireworks were going off all around him was a nice treat, and while drugs shouldn’t be the answer, it’s good to see him have the chance to take it easy for once and overcome his typical struggles.
