What I’m Watching: Covert Affairs

Covert Affairs: Season 2, Episode 15 “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” (B)

There’s something very meta about a spy posing as a civilian being recruited to be spy. This hour was decently entertaining, but it wasn’t nearly as enticing or thrilling as some of the recent installments this series has produced. That was due in part to the rather lackluster performance by guest star Tony Curran as rogue MI-6 agent Kenneth Martin, who didn’t add much of anything to the hour. It’s also much more fun to see Annie showing off her abilities rather than trying to downplay them to pretend like she’s not actually a spy. The fact that the dumb thugs just put the two of them in the trunk without thinking to restrain or subdue them and practically asked them to escape made it even less exciting. Danielle’s value as a character is beginning to waver, as she doesn’t seem much affected by her knowledge that Annie is a spy, but has yet to realize that her relationship troubles with Michael are hardly as interesting as anything that happens in Annie’s life. Auggie’s romance has been good for him, and it’s good to see him make peace with the fact that, sometimes, all good things must come to an end. Jay is understandably experiencing some difficulties in his new role, and that’s mainly due to meddling from both his father and Arthur. Fortunately, Arthur seems wise and kindly enough to know when to help out an enemy in need, saving Jai’s guys from certain doom and letting Jai take the credit.
