What I’m Watching: 2 Broke Girls

2 Broke Girls: Season 1, Episode 11 “And the Reality Check” (B+)

This was a fun episode because it referenced something that I’ve all but forgotten: Caroline used to be a celebrity. Having Max reveal her link to the disgraced Channing to Peach immediately reminded of that and brought things back together in a whole new way. Caroline has always discussed how she used to be rich, but it’s interesting to remember that others are well aware who she is. Max’s idea to have Peach take care of Chestnut is brilliant, more so for the show than for its characters. Having that horse in their tiny backyard may have been funny, but it was also more than a little ridiculous and likely unsustainable through the winter (though he’d likely survive current temperatures in New York City). Now, the show can take some time to establish itself, and if, in several months, it’s decided that the horse needs to come back into the story, it will. Otherwise, they can easily forget it and move on with their lives. I enjoyed Max’s realization of a productive use for Oleg, to have him take pictures of his “junk” on a hipster’s camera that had been left in the diner. Max quizzing Han on the differences between hipsters and homeless people in the opening scene was quite funny, as was the fact that she kicked out the hipsters and not the homeless people. It’s something that would only happen on this show, but given what we know about Max and her attitudes on other Brooklynites, it makes perfect sense.
