What I’m Watching: The Office

The Office: Season 8, Episode 10 “Christmas Wishes” (B+)

Check off this episode under the list of the stronger installments this season has offered, even if it’s hardly the funniest Christmas installment produced by this show. Andy’s notion of giving everyone a Christmas wish was a good idea, though of course it presented some problems. I enjoyed Stanley’s tirade against weird holiday parties and Black Santas, and thought that Dwight’s gift of an acre of land on the moon was just perfect for him. Andy bringing his girlfriend Jessica was clearly going to reignite the awkwardness between him and Erin, but it turned out to be even more entertaining than expected. Erin telling Andy that her Christmas wish was that Jessica was dead was harsh, and her follow-up comment, that he was either a murderer or a liar, was quite funny. Her subsequent bonding with Robert was somewhat unexpected, and it was good to see two kindred spirits coming together in what Andy seemed to think was a platonic way. Cathy’s request to leave Dwight and Jim’s clump due to too much pranking resulted in some of the most inspired efforts on behalf of the two pranksters in a long time, highlighted by Dwight’s accidental reveal of his porcupine’s name and the reaction to Jim showing the defaced picture of his daughter. Val had an unusual showcase in this episode, showing up embarrassingly dressed up to the holiday party, and I love that Darryl put on a tux so that she wouldn’t feel singled out. I hope they work out, since it’s been an entertaining road so far.
