Golden Globe nominations for this year will be soon, so here’s a survey of the contenders and the most likely predictions at this time. Weigh in with your thoughts, and let me know if I’ve left off anyone important. A reminder that last year’s nominees mean zilch at the Globes and that the race is almost entirely unpredictable.
Last year’s nominees:
Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)
Piper Perabo (Covert Affairs)
Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy)
Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer)
New contenders:
Kathy Bates (Harry’s Law)
Maria Bello (Prime Suspect)
Connie Britton (American Horror Story)
Claire Danes (Homeland)
Mireille Enos (The Killing)
Potential first-time nominees:
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
Lauren Graham (Parenthood)
Past nominees:
Glenn Close (Damages)
Count out Elisabeth Moss, whose series didn’t air in the year 2011. Don’t expect a return from Glenn Close, who was snubbed last year despite her show being eligible. Save one spot for Claire Danes, a past winner in this category whose show is sure to be positively received. This year’s Emmy nominees Kathy Bates and Mireille Enos may also factor into the race, and then there’s Connie Britton, theoretically eligible for both the final season of “Friday Night Lights” and the first season of “American Horror Story,” two spectacularly different roles. Julianne Margulies is the only safe bet, since Kyra Sedgwick was snubbed by Emmy voters this past year, though such omissions don’t always align between both organizations. Piper Perabo’s nomination may have been seen as a fluke last year, but the show has proved to be solidly entertaining, and Katey Sagal’s win means that she could well be back this year.
Current predictions:
Connie Britton (AHH)
Claire Danes
Julianne Margulies
Katey Sagal
Kyra Sedgwick
