What I’m Watching: Hell on Wheels

Hell on Wheels: Season 1, Episode 5 “Bread and Circuses” (B+)

This fight between Cullen and Elam has been brewing for a long time now, and it was sure to be intense and monumental no matter who won. Durant’s efforts to redirect the focus of his employees to cover up his missing paychecks, no matter how transparent it may have been to Lily, was a clever ruse, and seems to have worked as he needed a bit of extra time to threaten the bank that wouldn’t give him more money with financial ruin. Cullen realized shortly into the fight that Elam wasn’t fighting back, but all it took was an impressive pep talk about what Cullen represented to get him back into the game and lead him to a surprising victory over the cocky Cullen. It’s fortunate that Sean decided to cut another bet with Psalms so that he and Mickey won’t lose their business and their life savings, and now they just have to worry about the fact that the Swede clearly has it out for them, and is not going to leave them alone anytime soon. I love that Lily came clean with Durant about her possession of her husband’s maps, demanding what could only be considered fair in return for them: the compensation owed to her husband. The visit from the Reverend’s daughter was a small part of the hour but still memorable, as she heard sounds of the fight and went to go see it, only to have blood land on her face the moment she entered. Reverend Cole’s interest in the fate of the Indians should prove interesting, and we’ll see what becomes of that.
