What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 1, Episode 8 “Bad in Bed” (B+)

This episode was a lot of fun because it exposed some interesting fears that all of the players, excluding Winston as usual after his unusual spotlight last week, have. Schmidt’s storyline was perhaps the most amusing, as his workplace life is highlighted for the first time since one of the very early episodes, revealing that he is in fact the only male at work, subject to some harassment and more often to exclusion from what might be considered female-only events. I couldn’t peg the actress that portrayed his number one nemesis Beth, and upon some research, I discovered that it was the fantastic Eva Amurri, who appeared in a terrific arc in season three of “Californication.” I hope she sticks around and causes more trouble for Winston before the two eventually and inevitably hook up. Nick’s fear of getting his haircut because he didn’t like the forced conversation was amusing and well-dramatized, and at least it gave Winston something to talk about. Jess’ nervousness about sleeping with Paul was understandable, and their role play staging was awkward as anything, especially considering all of the porn that Jess had watched beforehand which had most certainly put her mind in the wrong place. Luckily, Paul seems like a nice guy whose weirdness is on par with Jess’, and they too make a great couple. Even more fortunately, they got it right in the elevator, and no one would have been the wiser but for a misplaced shoe which managed to give them away.
