What I’m Watching: Sons of Anarchy

Sons of Anarchy: Season 4, Episode 13 “To Be, Act 1” (A-)

I’m so glad that a fourteenth episode of this season was commissioned, presumably allowing for this finale to be split over two weeks, since this hour was packed full of fascinating developments that I wouldn’t have wanted to see truncated for the sake of time. I’ve commented recently that I love when characters are completely honest with each other on television shows after plenty of lying, and there was so much of that in this episode from Gemma that it was shocking. Telling Tara about Opie was one thing, but revealing that Clay put out the hit on her was highly unexpected. Asking her for the letters to give to Clay was a bit surprising, but even more shocking was the fact that she gave them to Jax, whom she promptly told the complete truth about John, the letters, and Tara, save for the part that incriminated her and Unser. Her efforts to get Jax to take Clay’s seat at the head of the table, where a Teller belongs, are likely to be thwarted by an increasingly furious Tara, who turned out to be the one who suggested just how Jax could kill Clay and get away with it, before driving her and her sons out of the poisonous town of Charming. Internal conflicts aside, I’m extremely worried about the ramifications of Tig’s actions, and there are so many fake beefs that have been created on this show that it’s hard to remember which of them area actually real. All I can say is that next week is going to be just as intense as this show has ever been.
