Dexter: New Blood: Season 9, Episode 4 “‘H’ is for Hero” (B+)
It’s strange to think of this show and its world being so intimately tied to the original series, like Harrison listening to Molly’s podcast about the Trinity Killer because he killed his mother and Dexter being reminded of Deb when Harrison swore like she used to all the time. The alert that Dexter got about the high school being on lockdown suggested something much more serious and disturbing than even this show has attempted in the past given the real-life prominence of school shootings. Instead, Harrison was the reluctant hero who stopped Ethan from becoming a school shooter, and while the police have now learned that Ethan has a different story about what happened, only Dexter is actually going to follow up on that, realizing that he did inherit plenty from his dad. This also now makes sense given the news that John Lithgow would be appearing in this season, since that could easily happen via flashback or Deb-like conscience manifestation. The notion of a kill list being publicized and Audrey being on it makes this even more unsettling, and that doesn’t even account for the bigger threat out there which Molly and Angela both now is part of a pattern that hasn’t yet been properly investigated. Kurt continues to maintain that he has seen his son since Dexter killed him, and now he’s making offers to young women to keep them around when it’s very likely that he has infinitely more nefarious plans for her than just a job to help get her back on her feet.
