What I’m Watching: Succession

Succession: Season 3, Episode 7 “Too Much Birthday” (B+)

This family really is crazy, and it’s hard to find a good one among any of them. Kendall might seem like the purest because he wants to hold his father accountable, but the lavishness of his birthday party was absolutely absurd. The hall of fake news stories about his siblings was particularly cruel, and though Shiv seemed least bothered by it, none of it was nice at all. Connor’s refusal to take off his coat was an entertaining subplot, and Willa came to his defense in a way that made him very happy. Roman tried so hard to get into the session he had been explicitly restricted from, and, as usual, he was merely doing his father’s bidding, which sent Kendall reeling. He was even more rattled by his inability to locate his children’s present, and he took out his discomfort on Naomi for daring to get him an unengraved watch. Shiv reacted very harshly to Roman and Logan cutting her out again, which is no surprise, and this family really knows how to alienate any potential allies. Tom and Greg walking around congratulating each other for not going to jail feels like a bad idea, and naturally Tom got mad at Greg for being too happy. Greg got an unexpectedly positive reception to his flirtation, though Kendall might be furious at him for it. I appreciated the casting of Alexander Skarsgård as Lukas Matsson, whose line delivery was absolutely superb and who was completely immune to Kendall’s intense energy.
