Home Economics: Season 2, Episode 9 “Secret Santa Gift, $25 Limit” (B)
Having a spending limit on a gift exchange was always going to be a challenge for this family given their differing financial circumstances, and there were additional complicating factors that made it even more problematic. Tom getting his first paycheck should have been cause for celebration, but instead of using it for something that they would have really needed or even just wanted, he became obsessed with being paid up to his brother, someone for whom money doesn’t matter at all since he has more than enough of it. Connor didn’t help matters by refusing to acknowledge what Tom was trying to do, and fortunately they reached a happy ending together after much arguing. Sarah getting a fancy bag was the latest instance of her being put in a situation that found her confronting everything she couldn’t stand about the world, but she unsurprisingly didn’t mind the opportunity to be looked at in a different way, and the luxuries that came along with it. Denise watching the whole thing happen was pretty hilarious, and while Marina gives her a bit of competition, she’s really the best at watching something play out when someone is trying hard not to admit that they’re completely wrong and making it all even more entertaining. It was inevitable that Connor and Jojo might get together, and while it’s not a romance that’s likely to last, it’s sure to create some drama that’s going to have both Sarah and Denise wondering whether it’s a good idea or if it’s going to end badly.
