What I’m Watching: Insecure

Insecure: Season 5, Episode 7 “Chillin', Okay?!” (B+)

I like that this show just slows down sometimes and gives its characters a chance to talk and point out what they notice in each other’s lives. Issa’s girl’s day didn’t go as planned when a pipe burst at the spa, but luckily they had plenty of backups in the form of Questions in a Hat, a game that is apparently a tradition for this group. I enjoyed how some of the questions were very direct and meant to reference something that they usually wouldn’t want to talk about, which particularly got Kelli irritated. Molly got teased for her budding romance with Taurean, and then the conversation pivoted to Issa and her many men, which got everyone talking and offering their opinions about which of them they thought were the finest. Nobody objected to Nathan calling Issa inconsistent, which she did not like, and fortunately Molly stopped Issa from texting Nathan until she was sober. His phone call the next morning went well and spelled good things for their future, but then Lawrence had to go ahead and call too. His time with Condola was also full of positivity, with praise for Lawrence as a dad and a powerful revelation about Condola, but I’m not sure that being anything more than congenial co-parents is in their future. Tiffany moving to Denver, which got everyone very upset when she just dropped it in the middle of the conversation, doesn’t feel all that consequential since she’s always been a background part of this show, but her brief appearances are entertaining.
