What I’m Watching: Dexter: New Blood (Penultimate Episode)

Dexter: New Blood: Season 9, Episode 9 “The Family Business” (B+)

This was actually quite reminiscent of the timeline of Trinity, with Dexter taking care of Kurt and then returning home to find the mess that he made that he’s never going to be able to clean up. The stakes aren’t quite as high here because the person Dexter loves is safe and with him, and it’s just a matter of Angela figuring out how she’s going to confront Dexter about his very obviously being the Bay Harbor Butcher. Deb warning Dexter not to tell Harrison about the blood slide or even that he kills people made for a productive moment to reveal that when Harrison saw the horrors of what Kurt had done and essentially suggested the more fatal solution. He wasn’t shocked by Dexter’s answer of “hundreds” when he asked how many times he had done this, but he did seem uncomfortable with the casual way he was cutting up the body. It was extremely awkward to see earlier how Dexter was being casual with Angela and getting her a book about police procedures as a Christmas present, then joking about what they’d have to do if their kids ended up getting together. Confirming Dexter’s ketamine purchase was the last bit of proof she needed to convince herself, and proving it legally will be easy with the evidence Kurt sent Angela before he got killed. I’m definitely interested to see how she’s going to handle that, and I’m hopeful that one season of this reboot won’t be all we’ll get since it does seem worth continuing.
