Conversations with Friends: Season 1, Episode 11 (B+)
With just one episode of this show left, it seems unlikely that things will end well for Frances and Nick’s enduring relationship, but this half-hour allowed them to process the way that they see each other even if that did come with an acknowledgement that they won’t be able to stay together. The fact that they’re being completely open and honest with each other is helpful, and his state of mind when he met her did explain why he considered having an affair when he hadn’t even been the one to do that. Meeting her mom was an unexpected turn of events, and she seemed to think that they looked elegant together like film stars, which feels like an astute and layered observation that speaks to the impermanence of their union. Frances reacted very poorly to the news that he had slept with Melissa, and having their argument interrupted by her holding the baby truly felt a goodbye. The more troubling disagreement which is sure to have lasting implications came from Melissa telling Bobbi about Frances having her story published. She didn’t appreciate the way that Frances portrayed her in the story. The words she used to lash out at Frances conveyed lingering emotions that are just bubbling to the surface, like Frances’ self-obsession being boring and her believing that no one else was real and that Bobbi moved effortlessly though the world. Frances is going to have to work hard to earn Bobbi’s forgiveness, and this whole interaction with Melissa and Nick may show her that it’s just not worth it.
