What I’m Watching: Mr. Mayor (Series Finale)

Mr. Mayor: Season 2, Episode 10 “The Debate” (B)

I suppose it’s fitting that this show should end on a truly odd note, going out just the way it came in, fully embracing the wackiness that has defined past shows from this creative team. Titi B. no longer running because she got distracted wasn’t much of a surprise, though it turns out that was all part of her plan in the first place, showing up late once drama has already started so that she can get whatever she wants. Learning that Arpi doesn’t eat anything that requires refrigeration was definitely worthwhile, and seeing her transform into someone she definitely is not was a fun opportunity for her to play dumb only to blow her cover when Neil baited her. I also liked that a full episode of “Scrubs” aired midway through the debate due to a scheduling error, and it’s wild to see Ed Begley Jr. as the hapless Chet Danville here when he’s playing the much more sensible and observant Clifford Main on “Better Call Saul” at the same time. While Mikaela and James’ relationship drama was always a bit nutty, it was the source of this episode’s most entertaining moment, which was when they got caught in a lie about Mikaela being the mayor because Walt has been outsmarting death for 100 years and wasn’t going to be fooled by them. Ending with Jayden’s October surprise of Neil’s apparent adult daughter and then his big prize win means that this show will forever be a wild mess, which I think is appropriate given that it’s always celebrated and embraced its peculiarities. Though I’ve never found it to be terrific, I will miss many of Jayden’s lines and its insanity.

Season grade: B
Season MVP: Vella Lovell as Mikaela
