Conversations with Friends: Season 1, Episode 9 (B+)
This show hasn’t actually spent that much time on Frances’ writing career, and opening with her narrating this episode was a helpful reminder that this is what she wants to do with her life. After her card was rejected and she wasn’t able to reach her dad to find out if he knew why her account was overdrawn, she had a surprise meeting with Valerie in which she overestimated where she was in this whole process. She didn’t have too much time to process that since she heard from Nick and then passed out outside in the rain. Bobbi sprang into action to help her, reminding her that she’s seen her naked a million times before and that she was going to undress her in the least sexy manner possible. It’s fascinating to see the complexities of their relationship, with Bobbi calling Nick on her behalf to take care of her after she expressed that she tried to tell him but, as Bobbi put it, likely in a “Frances way” rather than an actual way. Thanks to Bobbi’s intervention, Nick did show up, which was exactly what Frances needed in that moment. Letting her know that he told Melissa was important, but more than that, that he loved her and that he should have told her earlier. The dialogue on this show is superb and the delivery from the actors is even better, namely Frances’ “how much earlier” question. What he didn’t detail was how Melissa responded to his confession, and it will be interesting to see if Bobbi figures into the equation in a way that can make things make sense.
