Conversations with Friends: Season 1, Episode 12 (B+)
If there was any cast member who was underused on this show, it was Jemima Kirke, and I’m glad to see that she got another fantastic scene in an episode that didn’t really deal with Melissa and Nick all that much. Frances calling Melissa to question why she would have told Bobbi about her story was met with understandable indignation, considering that it was Frances who had an affair with her husband in the first place and contributed to a rift in their marriage. I’m glad that Frances was able to reconcile with Bobbi, who responded to her email with a true appreciation for the way in which she said what she said and the sentiment that came along with it. This show does tenderness well, and there was a real authenticity to the way that they kissed and slept together for the first time in a long time, reigniting a spark which Frances rightly said they had never properly processed why it hadn’t worked. Having the two of them get together after an entire show spent on their friendship and their attractions to other people felt like an oddly fitting ending, but there was one big surprise left for the final scene. Nick accidentally calling Frances felt like a misstep that could have been forgotten, but instead they delved deep into feelings that were apparently very much still there. Frances telling Nick to come get her was a haunting way to sign off, because it signals that the lust remains, and even and especially if they don’t work out, Frances is doomed to lose her other relationships, like Bobbi, since she’s still attached to a dream of what something could feel like rather than the reality she already has. This show has been extremely potent and watchable, and I look forward to see what all of this cast does next.
