This Is Us: Season 6, Episode 18 “Us”
This is about as satisfying a finale as we could have expected, since, as I discussed in my interview with Chrissy Metz recently, there’s so much that this show couldn’t cover because it was ending at this point. That would have been true no matter how long it went on, and that’s the tricky part of a show that offers so many glimpses of the future. This series ender was effective, however, since it chose to focus on moments of tenderness that encapsulated what this show has always been about, even if they’re not entirely indicative of all the relationships that exist. There are two scenes in particular that stand out to me, and both are very well done. Kate commenting on how she was just happy to be spending time together with family while her two brothers were acting bratty and relatively uninterested in spending time with her or their parents led to a game of Foursquare and the kind of day that just felt very normal. Reflected back in the way that only this show can do in the context of Rebecca’s funeral, it felt especially heartwarming. And then, in the future, there was Randall, preparing for his next big political move with some question marks and the unconditional support of Beth, who got to learn from his adopted daughter, Déjà, that she was pregnant and that he was going to be a grandfather. Considering his own experience with adoption, that was a very meaningful moment. This show has really been something, and I hope it earns the enthusiastic Emmy love that’s mostly avoided it in the past for this final outing.
