What I’m Watching: Atlanta

Atlanta: Season 4, Episode 4 “Light Skinned-ed” (B+)

It’s been such a long time since this show first premiered that I legitimately couldn’t remember if we had seen any of these members of Earn’s family before. It turns out that Gloria did appear in the pilot and another influential early episode, but this is the first time that the great Isiah Whitlock Jr. showed up. Telling the woman who wanted to sell him a hat that he was on a schedule and had no time for distractions was no match for her flattery, and then he ended up trying on a number of options before falling for the appeal of the hat that wasn’t normally sold to customers. Realizing that church was already out by the time he was done trying them all on sent him into a momentary panic, and he had no patience left by the time the waiter didn’t want to give Gloria bread to go. Those antics were typically ridiculous, putting Earn and Alfred once again in an awkward position as they had to endure Jeanie talking to the police officers about how Gloria had taken her father against his will. Professing that her sisters hated her because she was light-skinned resulted in an even harsher declaration that they didn’t like her because she was evil, and her father’s assertion that he knew who he was with was sufficient for the police even if he said right after that he was in Egypt. Walking slowly and inauspiciously also worked well for Earn and Alfred, who finally got away from the misery while their aunt wasn’t looking.
