What I’m Watching: Big Sky (Season Premiere)

Big Sky: Season 3, Episode 1 “Do You Love an Apple” (B)

I’m not sure exactly how it is that I’m still watching this show two seasons in, but I have found myself intrigued by the show’s new characters, and now that Ronald and all that are finally a thing of the past, I’m mildly interested in the many additions to the ensemble. The most noteworthy is Reba McEntire, whose casting is reminiscent of Margo Martindale in season two of “Justified,” a friendly Southern presence who is hiding very sinister intentions underneath that welcoming public face. There’s also Rex Linn from “Better Call Saul,” Seth Gabel from “Dirty Sexy Money,” and Luke Mitchell from “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” along with Henry Ian Cusick from “Lost.” Though he did appear in the finale, Jensen Ackles now has a much bigger part, having bonded quite a bit with Cassie and working decently well with Jenny. I like the fact that Ackles took on a very different role from his villainous and crude turn as Soldier Boy in the most recent season of “The Boys,” and Beau seems like he’s the best ally Cassie and Jenny could have. But he’s also very intricately involved in the latest case, in the same way that Jenny was in season one and then Cassie and Mark were in season two. Cassie doing a deal with Tonya was a questionable move since it means that she’s treating her as if she’s not a criminal, and the continued presence of Tonya and Donno without Ren and company suggests that they might still be tangentially involved in the show’s drama even if they’re not officially targets of any investigations.
