What I’m Watching: Reboot

Reboot: Season 1, Episode 5 “What We Do in the Shadows” (B+)

I guess I just wasn’t paying close enough attention before this to realize that every episode title refers to a sitcom, but now I see that quite clearly. What I enjoyed most about this episode was how Hannah realized what Gordon was trying to do in constantly searching for a pen every time Reed or one of the other actors tried to actually talk to him. She pegged her father perfectly when she suggested the kind of restaurant that Sandy and Norman used to go to in “The Kominsky Method,” and it was a great setup for him to have to confront Reed rather than avoiding him. It was fun to hear them compliment each other for the skills they knew the other had but didn’t actually put to good use, and Reed ultimately extended a hand of friendship by offering to pee on Chuck Lorre’s star while the two of them were very drunk. Promising the cop a part on the show was a humorous ending to that unexpected bonding experience. Hannah arguably had the much less enticing evening, accompanying Zack to get what she thought was going to be a very cute cat back. It was fun to have a mini “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” reunion with Esther Povitsky, who had plenty of attitude as Marcy and ended up much more sympathetic to her ex-boyfriend by the time he and Hannah left. It was good to see some drama with Clay going to an AA meeting while he was trying to help Bree out while she was on mushrooms, giving a serious edge to a generally unpleasant character.
