Ghosts: Season 2, Episode 1 “Spies” (B+)
It’s a delight to be able to start watching a show you got into late when it returns for all audiences, and I’m glad that’s the case here for a series I liked at first but then didn’t stick with until it was clear just how good everyone else thought it was. There should never have been any doubt, and in truth I was just too busy during the fall pilot season, but I’m glad to be watching along with everyone else now. It would have been too easy for Jay to fall and then be able to see the ghosts too, since that’s part of the premise that only Sam can see them, but I like just how much he wanted it to happen, thinking that a real person who had shown up was Pete. Using the ghosts to spy on the terrible Yelp reviewers was fun, and I was excited to recognize Don Lake of the recently-axed “Space Force” as Thomas, no relation to the English muffin. Jay springing to Sam’s defense was sweet, and I loved that they thought all their reviews were anonymous, something that was not the case at all. The best moment of the episode was definitely when, after Isaac apologized to Thorfinn, Nigel pointed out his affinity for watching ants and the two of them discovered they have something to bond over which Isaac couldn’t possibly have any less interest in doing. This should be a fun season ahead, and I’m looking forward to seeing more guests show up.
