What I’m Watching: The Handmaid’s Tale

The Handmaid’s Tale: Season 5, Episode 4 “Dear Offred” (B+)

It’s a jarring idea to think that Gilead could open an embassy within Canada even with victims of the totalitarian regime so close in proximity, and Serena is taking that to an entirely extremely level by mailing June an invitation to the opening of the “information center.” I think Joseph summed it up best when he called June her stalker, though Luke also went to pay her a visit and try a less violent form of pressure before telling her that he wasn’t going to stop June from killing her. Getting the center shut down is a win, and even Serena doesn’t seem all that comfortable with her new very Gilead-esque accommodations, in part because she’s not actually living that life anymore, with men at her service and the ability to run her own affairs, not to mention to pick up a pen. Mark isn’t in anyone’s good graces anymore, though maybe he’ll be able to work his asset Nick to accomplish some real change within Gilead. It’s disappointing that Joseph didn’t go for Lydia’s handmaid reform plan since that would be a very good step in subtly bettering society, and no one would suspect Lydia of all people of doing anything against her sovereign god-given nation. Janine didn’t buy it either, especially Lydia has caused her and so many others a great deal of hurt. Ending the episode on June and Luke having passionate sex seems most designed to show that they’re a team now, and they’re going to be able to get big things done together.
