House of the Dragon: Season 1, Episode 7 “Driftmark” (B+)
Things do move quite fast on this show, and we didn’t even need a ten-year jump to get to the point where Rhaenyra is now married to Daemon, an unimaginable thing just two episodes ago when Rhaenyra was all for it and Daemon wasn’t ready to go through with it. He’s had the biggest change in perspective, of course, falling for his wife after killing the previous one, and then devastated by her loss. Laean’s death had consequences for multiple people, starting with the boy who ended up as the new master of her dragon. We last saw Aemond being bullied by his brother and cousins for not having a dragon of his own, and now he has one, and a lifelong scar to go with it. Alicent declaring that one of Rhaenyra’s sons should also have to lose an eye as penance for her son’s was cruel, and then she just fully lost it when she went at her former best friend in front of everyone. Laenor seemed to have a newfound positive attitude based on what he witnessed with the children, and it looks like he may have gotten what he always wanted. I read that scene as him having been told of an escape plan, surviving as part of what Daemon and Rhaenyra had hatched to make everyone happy. His being alive poses a threat to Rhaenyra’s rule, but he bears no ill will towards her and will never tell. It’s hard to know where things go from here with a full three episodes left before the end of the season.
