Conversations with Friends: Season 1, Episode 6 (B+)
I’m glad that Frances and Bobbi were able to reconcile in the span of just one episode, especially after the opening scene with them riding back together silently didn’t suggest much hope of being able to talk it out. Bobbi’s texts were sincere and honest, expressing that she was hurt, and she was correct that Frances thought she would disapprove, even slipping back into judgmental territory when they were walking together and back on good terms. Frances searching her texts with Bobbi for the word “feelings” was an interesting deep dive into the nature of their relationship and the acknowledgment of emotions, and though she doesn’t share it, she apparently is affected strongly by when she feels like other people don’t want her there, like in the case of seeming like the one who shouldn’t be there when she walked in on them having an affair. Telling Bobbi that she imagined her at the center of her life was a considerable admission for Frances, though I would argue that she’s the most passive of all these characters, even if that’s how she described Nick. Her trip to the hospital in this episode was worrisome, and she was particularly prickly with the doctor who wanted clarification of her never having had unprotected “full sex.” Bobbi was understandably startled to hear that she was in the hospital and hadn’t told her, and even though he doesn’t know what happened, Nick seemed to get that she was going through something. I’m not sure what happens now that Bobbi knows since continuing things without her being in the loop doesn’t seem like a good plan.
