This hour-long installment really felt like a season finale. The sense that Max was actually accomplishing something, the involvement of all of the characters, and the heroic riding by Han were all signs that this show was well aware that it should go out with a bang. Like most of the episodes before it, this one wasn’t without its flaws, and the onslaught of sexual references by Oleg and Sophie was a bit overwhelming. This show is capable of being very funny, but it’s never quite sure when to quit so as to avoid overdoing it. We almost got a peek at Caroline’s father via a computer screen, and his bad name once again hindered Caroline and Max’s progress in their cupcake business, as dictated to them by the assistant that said one thing out loud and then whispered the opposite while covering his microphone. They did manage to make it into the party, and while Martha Stewart’s appearance in the bathroom could have been predicted by anyone, it still managed to work pretty well. It’s not clear whether her positive comments and her request for a business card will actually lead to anything, but the important development is that they’re now on the map. Gathering the whole crew together in the diner to try the cupcakes was great, and I liked how Han protested the fact that Caroline only ever listens to herself, talking about cupcakes and occasionally her horse. This first season has been fun, and though this show isn’t the best sitcom ever to hit the TV scene, it’s still got heart, and it’s pretty damn funny some of the time.
