What I’m Watching: New Girl (Season Finale)

New Girl: Season 1, Episode 24 “See Ya” (B+)

A field trip is always a great way to end a season, particularly a comedy, and this installment was a fantastic wrap-up for a freshman season that started out somewhat iffy but quickly got really, really good. Winston and Schmidt celebrating the virtues of Nick leaving, like Winston not having to lend him money and Schmidt being able to throw cash at a plumber, were clear signs that they weren’t okay with him moving out, though Jess was the more aggressive force in trying to compel him to stay, actively campaigning against newbie Neal, who was once in the awkward position of having to let himself go. Nick and Jess ending up face-to-face with an actual coyote out in the desert played out more plausibly than it might sound, and it was a good bonding moment. Winston’s fear of the dark played an amusing part in everything, and I liked how Schmidt said “woof” instead of wolf. I’d hate for this to be the end of Cece and Schmidt, especially over something as silly as a text message, and I do hope that their relationship continues now that Schmidt is closer to regaining the use of his penis. A good old-fashioned panic – and dramatic throwing of keys into the desert – is understandable, and I’m just grateful that Nick realized the error of his ways and returned home in this installment, so that the next season can get started right away without having to figure out a clever way to bring him home. I can’t wait to see more of these terrific characters.

Season grade: B+
Season MVP: Zooey Deschanel
