What I’m Watching: Modern Family

Modern Family: Season 3, Episode 22 “Disneyland” (B+)

A field trip to Disneyland makes perfect sense for this extended family unit, and though their adventures aren’t much relates to the Disney characters or attractions, they’re still quite memorable. This show is at its best when it’s representing something relatable to audience members, and that happened on multiple fronts in this installment. Jay’s argument with Gloria about her wearing the wrong shoes or not bringing a jacket and then asking him for his because she’s cold, resulting in him being cold, was definitely familiar, and I love its resolution with Jay buying her duck slippers that were extraordinarily comfortable. Outfitting Lily with a pair of high heels was a fantastic follow-up, so that she wouldn’t be able to outrun her desperate fathers who had previously put her on a leash. Money Delgado’s stocks project was entertaining, and it’s just like Manny to be less than present at an activity geared specifically for his age because he’s thinking about something much more adult. Phil’s panic about his difficulties in keeping up with Luke on all the rides was hilariously transformed from an aging issue to his glee about having the flu, negating his inability to still have fun with his son. Claire’s attainment of a nice college guy for Haley didn’t work out well at all, with Alex flirting with him while Haley was once again swayed by Dylan, who managed to upset my roommate by ruining the magic and talking while playing a Disney character, something which is apparently very much against the rules.
