What I’m Watching: The Big C

The Big C: Season 3, Episode 4 “Family Matters” (B+)

I love the casting choices this show makes. After utilizing Alan Alda, Liam Neeson, and Susan Sarandon to great effect, the best selection yet was Victor Garber as the real Willie, so upset about how Sean managed to snatch his phone number after he failed to pay his phone bill on time. It’s so wonderful to see Garber have so much fun trying to one-up the eccentric Sean when he’s on the phone with a client. Stalking Sean to Joy’s seminar really was a fateful move, and it managed to solve problems for everyone. Though Cathy doesn’t like Joy and still doesn’t completely buy what she’s selling, and Paul might be getting a bit into the attention he’s getting from women because of his blog, but it seems like it’s all paid off, as Cathy posted on Paul’s widely-trafficked blog that they wanted to adopt, eliciting a bite that could well lead to something. It’s much better than Cathy forging Dr. Sherman’s signature on a letter attesting to her good health, and I’m glad that Paul put a pin in that idea as soon as she suggested it. I liked Paul’s flummoxed reaction to Joy telling him that she’ll have her assistant call his assistant, and I look forward to seeing more of his speaking gigs. Adam’s having some wild experiences of his own, and Jesse’s spiritual piety is going to throw him for even more of a loop than what he’s gone through recently with all of his family drama.
