What I’m Watching: Common Law

Common Law: Season 1, Episode 11 “Hot for Teacher” (B+)

It’s a wonder that it took until the penultimate episode of the season for both Wes and Travis to find themselves attracted to their therapist. It’s fun that Wes had a dream first, and that he was stupid enough to tell Travis about it. Incorporating her personal life into the hour was great, and it makes sense that her fiancé wouldn’t be all that impressive and wouldn’t be opposed to immoral business decisions since that makes her all the more attainable for both of the smitten cops. Reed Diamond, currently starring on “Franklin and Bash,” was a great choice to play the part of the mallmaker, and I like that Wes and Travis chose to endorse his character to Dr. Ryan rather than try to ruin their relationship. Breaking off their therapy was a surprise, though I think the show has established itself well enough now that it can cut her loose altogether without suffering at all. The subtle reactions of the other male group members to their own transference histories were amusing, but I don’t think that the group disappearing would be much of a less either. They’re sure to be in for quite a ride in the season finale with Ed Begley Jr.’s nutty shrink, who seems to have a whole lot of anger management issues. Speaking of guest stars, the lawyer who grew up with the mobster was Wade Williams, best known for playing prison guard Brad Bellick on “Prison Break,” here portraying a far more intelligent character.
