Take Three: The Mindy Project

The Mindy Project: Season 1, Episode 3 “In the Club” (B+)

It’s good that this show seems interested in taking outings from its primary hospital setting, and while a trip to a club isn’t entirely superb, it does help to demonstrate that this show has fantastic characters. Mindy’s self-proclaimed attractiveness to African-American men was undercut considerably by the fact that a cocky white sports attorney was very into her, and, while I don’t see much happening with that relationship, his courtship could prove an interesting distraction for the near future. I’m sure, however, that she’ll ultimately end up in a love-hate relationship with Danny, who showed off his dancing skills and then took home a girl at the end of the night, prompting a lingering glance from Mindy. Jeremy in particular is turning out to have more depth than expected, in that he’s defined by his promiscuity and talked into being a half-decent person by the most surprisingly legitimate character of all, Morgan, who went from being a weird guest star to a crucial if odd and creepy major player. His bathroom attendee stunt was nothing new, but it was still entertaining since it was so underplayed. Even Betsy, for all of her clinginess and naiveté, is working out, showing just how clueless she is by ordering a $300 bottle of wine, which Morgan attempted to pay for with his $37 in bathroom tips. While giving Shauna a personality is appreciated, I’d love to see Anna Camp’s Gwen put to better use than just being on the receiving end of a phone call.
