New Girl: Season 2, Episode 3 “Fluffer” (B+)
And now we’re officially back. This show’s first two installments weren’t spectacular but this third one is, providing laughs on all fronts. Best of all is the analysis of the relationship between Jess and Nick. Normally, it wouldn’t be a good idea to delve into the particularities of their situation so early into a show’s run, but this came about in a perfect way. Winston calling Nick her fluffer led to an awkward but extremely funny shouting match in which they both admitted to having been attracted to each other at odd moments, and got some important things out in the open. Ultimately, they shouldn’t be together, and it’s best that Nick merely provides Jess with a music mix that helps her in her emotionless relationship with Sam. Watching the two of them get drunk on white wine at a restaurant and Nick blubbering on about the many possible pronunciations of the word thermos was deeply amusing as well. Schmidt pretending to be a Romney was among his more ambitious schemes, and it was extremely enjoyable to watch him get so into character before having his claims refuted outright by the surprisingly smart sorority sisters. Calling Cece when it went south wasn’t a surprise, but it’s nice to see that they are still close, which is sure to lead to something physical again soon. I’ve been reading arguments that Nick and Jess are the new Ross and Rachel, but I’d actually assign that status to Schmidt and Cece. While it’s still not a big part, Winston did get to have some fun being unintentionally creepy as he kept cheating on Shelby in his mind.
