What I’m Watching: Sons of Anarchy

Sons of Anarchy: Season 5, Episode 5 “Orca Shrugged” (B+)

The lengths to which the club goes to in order to ensure that they stay in business are astonishing, and the featured photography shoot in this episode took things to a weird place, especially with an interested Tig, who paid for his enthusiasm by getting a bite from the club’s poor captive when he woke up from his drug-induced state. Most peculiar was the presence of Walton Goggins, now officially the fifth cast member from “The Shield” to appear on this show after Jay Karnes, Kenny Johnson, David Rees Snell, and Benito Martinez, in a quite unusual role. Marshall Allman also lives up to his typecasting standard of being an annoying dumb kind in the middle of a complicated situation, and hopefully he won’t be around for long. The return of Mayor Hale comes with a cloud of corruption, contrasted by the home invasion shooting of Roosevelt’s pregnant wife. I knew it couldn’t be good for her to be featured since excessive demonstrations of personal life only ever lead to tragedy, but it’s sure to lead to extremely powerful content in the coming weeks since the club may step in to help Roosevelt even though they don’t always see eye to eye. Jax and his Irish friend definitely had some frustrations to get out, but the bikes seem to have taken the brunt of it. It’s no surprise that Gemma isn’t going to take being tossed out by Nero, and it’s nice that Tara is letting her in when she’s being shut out elsewhere. I don’t assume it will be so easy for Tara to recover the use of her hand, but it would be refreshing to see her smile more often.

I thought that the photography session in the show was the funniest thing I’ve seen on SOA in a while. Walt Goggins makes a fantastic working girl, complete with humor and no filter. That’s why I’ve got my Hopper timer set to record each new episode. Jax was just setting things up to blackmail the mayor into letting SAMCRO lease the property for the escort service. Well played sir, well played. My DISH co-worker couldn’t get over the fact that Tig was glued to Venus the whole time she was in the room. I just thought it was hilarious and hopefully this season will continue to lighten things up like this.
