Person of Interest: Season 2, Episode 2 “Bad Code” (B+)
There’s something very intriguing about the way that Reese and Carter were looking into Hannah’s past to try to explain how Root came about while she was busy tormenting Finch and the extremely detestable Denton Weeks. It adds layers of depth to Root, especially when it turned out that she wasn’t Hannah but the friend that saw her get abducted from the library. Having Reese and Carter share a hotel room didn’t even suggest any sexual tension but instead allowed the barriers to be broken down somewhat, to the point that, going forward, Carter and Fusco may be able to get more face time with and have better two-way communication with their previously mysterious friends. Finch’s ordeal was miserable, and it will be nice to see him relax and start doing good again instead of constantly fearing for the safety of random passersby. I like that he left a coded message for Reese that sent him to Grand Central to intercept Root, and I think that Reese’s brief experience working directly with the machine should prove productive going forward. I like that it ended up being Fusco’s job to babysit the dog, which made him look especially stupid when he was referenced as being entirely incompetent. I’m not sure I can think of another character so relentlessly mocked and degraded on every possible occasion. In guest star news, it’s nice to see Margo Martindale but a shame to see her in such a throwaway part rather than something worthy of following up her Emmy-winning turn in “Justified.”
