What I’m Watching: Dexter

Dexter: Season 7, Episode 3 “Buck the System” (B+)

It’s wonderful – though that’s perhaps too pleasant a word – to see Dexter and Deb’s relationship playing out now that she’s starting to come to terms with what he is and why he does what he needs to do. Some of what he says out loud sounds nuttier than when he just narrates it, but it’s crucial to have that human interaction to keep him sane. Deb, however, should make sure to process how it sounds to the average person, as telling Laguerta about her lizard brain proved highly unproductive. It’s sure to be a continued uphill battle, but I really like where it’s headed. Focusing all of his attention on Deb has gotten Dexter very distracted, and he has no idea that Sirko is coming for him. I loved their chance meeting at the club, and I think Sirko will be very surprised once he learns that he’s already met his new target. Dexter did a terrific job of getting Louis booted from all aspects of his life, but it prompted Louis to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, as he was neatly executed by an angry Sirko like it was nothing. It’s refreshing to see some more honesty, as Nadia came clean with Quinn about working for George and Sirko, and I hope that doesn’t end badly for the ever-more-endearing Quinn. I’m thrilled to see Yvonne Strahovski as Hannah McKay, a role very different from the entertaining one she played on “Chuck,” and I think her interaction with Dexter is going to be the best part of this season.
