What I’m Watching: Significant Mother (Season Finale)

Significant Mother: Season 1, Episode 9 “Not About Bob” (B+)

I’m nearly certain that this show won’t end up being picked up by the CW for another season and that it will instead fade into obscurity, but I really hope that’s not the case. Nate’s strategy to get Jimmy back together with his mom was a substantial improvement over his efforts to keep Lydia’s house on the market. I love that he incorporated “Back to the Future” in so many ways and that he enlisted Atticus and Sam to help him convince Jimmy that if he didn’t go back and choose Lydia – among many other choices – he would end up destitute and working as an airport bartender of all things. Earlier on in the episode, it was nice to see Harrison act like a mature person and show up with divorce papers for a grateful Lydia, but naturally that didn’t last long and he devolved to his usual behavior very quickly. The contradictory and conflicting aspects of Nate’s best friend dating his mom were on display more than ever here, and they demonstrated that this show actually worked and was substantially better than I and I assume most others expected. Nate casually mentioning his kiss with Sam was a great moment, and I so wish that the show will have the opportunity to keep that thread going. If not, I’m not sure I’ll soon find a character as gleefully unintelligent as Jimmy, and the rest of the players weren’t bad either. This has been a fun first season, and I hope that the CW endorses a second.

Season grade: B+
Season MVP: Nathaniel Buzolic as Jimmy
