What I’m Watching: The Walking Dead (Season Premiere)

The Walking Dead: Season 6, Episode 1 “First Time Again” (B+)

Talk about an action-packed start to the season. It’s refreshing to see something a little different since this show does tend to be a bit cyclical, and this installment started on a fast-paced and intense note thanks to Rick’s big plan to drive the walkers out of the giant parking lot in which they had all gathered and far away from Alexandria. Using black and white to denote the past and then flashing to the present with color was an effective device that helped to underline the difference in time, but it was also striking to see how close together they actually were. There were two new faces in Alexandria who also helped drive home the risky nature of the operation and the way in which it affected the people involved. Lennie James’ Morgan is an externalization of Rick’s conscience, the person who was literally there at the very beginning when Rick first discovered this new world, and he’s not as far gone as Rick in terms of his view on the necessity of evil to keep good alive. Ethan Embry’s Carter, on the other hand, was just the latest person to try to cross and overthrow Rick, though he did fall into line to a degree when Rick spared his life. Getting bitten in the face during the operation and stabbed in the head by Rick wasn’t a glamorous ending, but it did show that, once again, Rick was right and he was going to die no matter what. Now if only someone in Alexandria hadn’t slammed on a horn to throw off his whole plan, sending a whole horde of walkers directly towards the city they tried so hard to keep safe.
