What I’m Watching: Shameless

Shameless: Season 6, Episode 11 “Sleep No More” (B+)

I had no idea whatsoever that this was this season’s penultimate episode, though in retrospect things really are intensifying to a point that they’re ready to either wrap up neatly or explode. I’m deeply concerned for the wellbeing of a number of the Gallagher children, all of whom are facing deep crises after things seemed to be going so well. Lip rebounded from the end of his relationship with Helene by landing a new job immediately, but he’s now spiraling downwards as his alcoholic side is taking over, leading him to many self-destructive and irreversible moments. Ian, by contrast, is in such a great place, going to a job he loves with a lunch kindly prepared by his terrific boyfriend, and it’s his past that’s coming back to haunt him even though he’s made it so far. Debs is having serious post-partum depression, and Frank blackmailing Derek’s parents into supporting the baby isn’t helping matters at all. Frank trying to be all fatherly is going quite poorly, and Sean losing it on him was a frightening sight. Carl, somehow, is the only one headed in a positive direction, still determined to become a cop despite his girlfriend’s father’s objections to everything that he is. On the lighter side, Veronica is really allowing her fake marriage to Svetlana to turn into a real romance, and though he was angry initially, Kev is figuring the best way to turn this entire situation to his advantage and make a game play for how to make this three-way relationship work.
