B Positive: Season 1, Episode 16 “A Cute Asphyxiation” (B+)
It’s important to remember that this show is a sitcom, which means that, when relationships are developed and serious content is featured, things are likely to work out in the end. We got to see how much Drew and Adriana’s relationship progressed when she woke up and called him a monster for getting up early to brush his teeth and put on deodorant, and they were somehow able to switch their very busy schedules around to accommodate a double date with Gina and Eli when they were having trouble finding time just for the two of them. Gina probably shouldn’t have told Drew not to let Eli pick up the bill since he did not keep that secret to himself for even a short time, but it didn’t seem to affect their friendship too much aside from Gina’s initial very angry answering of the phone. Having them sit together and wish everyone was as understanding as them before acknowledging that it was their fault was a fun moment. Drew also did not read Adriana’s cues at all when he showed during her requested alone time, and it was sweet that, once she was feeling a bit better, she came over to apologize. Eli also recognized that Gina wasn’t the problem, and she really does do a good job of filming his pun-heavy cameos. I’d like to meet Norma’s daughter one of these days even though, Linda Lavin’s talent aside, her character is not one of my favorite parts of this show. And while Jerry using the Superbowl ring to try to pick up women at a bar wasn’t fantastic, wouldn’t it have been nice to see him score a win for once?
