What I’m Watching: Why Women Kill

Why Women Kill: Season 2, Episode 7 “The Woman in Question” (B+)

This show didn’t waste any time in getting Rita very dramatically arrested and shifting all the power dynamics in a very interesting way. Bertram’s guilt could have been a big issue since he was already haunted by what he had done and then found out Rita had been arrested, which got him upset with Alma since she had so deliberately manipulated him into doing something that he would never have agreed to do. They didn’t have much of a chance to hash it out before it came up during their first meeting with Vern, which went okay despite an awkward start where he unhelpfully clarified that the baby wasn’t his and where his reaction to Bertram asking about Rita gave it away. Unfortunately, all this lying never leads to any good, and now Vern and Dee are going to help prove Catherine’s innocence because they think that it’s going to help her parents. As we know and Bertram pointed out, the trouble is that she is innocent, and after being kicked to the curb by Catherine, Isabel knows it too thanks to that damning photo which has Alma lurking in the background. The ultimate winner of the current situation is Scooter, who was pretending to believe Rita when he went to visit her in prison and then came close to confessing to Catherine, only to realize that he could come out ahead by acting as if he too was a victim. Cozying up to Catherine and moving into the house as her guest might go well, but it’s sure not to be pretty when Rita gets released and finds out what he’s done.
