Emmy Predictions: Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 13th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Alexis Bledel, Laverne Cox, Cherry Jones, Phylicia Rashad, Cicely Tyson, Harriet Walter

The competition: Two of last year’s nominees are eligible again this year, both vying for their third nominations in this category, Alexis Bledel (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Phylicia Rashad (This Is Us). Bledel faces internal competition from two actresses who had meatier roles this season: McKenna Grace (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Amanda Brugel (The Handmaid’s Tale). Past Emmy winner Claire Foy (The Crown) may contend again for reprising her role in a flashback, while two other Emmy favorites, Laverne Cox (The Blacklist) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), may show up for new roles. Though she died in September, Diana Rigg (All Creatures Great and Small) may be back posthumously for a guest spot following four nominations in this race for “Game of Thrones.” I’d hope that voters would be paying close enough attention to one of their favorite high-profile programs to reward the fantastic talent that is Rosario Dawson (The Mandalorian), Katee Sackhoff (The Mandalorian), and Ming-Na Wen (The Mandalorian), and that they’re watching an underappreciated series with a handful of excellent contenders: Noma Dumezweni (Pose), Jackée Harry (Pose), Anna Maria Horsford (Pose), and Angelica Ross (Pose). Though they’ve both never been nominated for Emmys before, it’s very possible that Gretchen Mol (Perry Mason) and Sophie Okonedo (Ratched) finally get recognized this time around.

The predicted nominees: Bledel, Brugel, Dawson, Grace, Rashad

The predicted winner: I think Dawson could win if she gets nominated.
