The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 13th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Mahershala Ali, Alan Arkin, Andre Braugher, Sterling K. Brown, William Jackson Harper, Dan Levy, Tony Shalhoub, Kenan Thompson
The competition: Just one of last year’s nominees is eligible to return again, and that’s Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live), who’s a sure thing to repeat, and I’m even betting on him to earn a lead acting nomination for his sitcom of the same name. Though there’s only been one instance of two men from SNL being nominated in one year – when Thompson and Alec Baldwin (considered a guest this season) competed together in 2018 – it’s likely to happen again this year, with Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live) both possible. There’s a new show that could offer up almost enough contenders to fill this entire category, and it’s just a question of how many of them will be nominated. My presumed order of likelihood for the men of “Ted Lasso” would be: Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso), Brendan Hunt (Ted Lasso), Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso), Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso), and Jeremy Swift (Ted Lasso). Another new show with multiple contenders has Michiel Huisman (The Flight Attendant) and T.R. Knight (The Flight Attendant) out front, while Ray Romano (Made for Love) and Billy Magnussen (Made for Love) are also strong possibilities. Two other actors eligible last year who have had increased roles this year on the final seasons of their shows are Alex Newell (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist) and Paul Reiser (The Kominsky Method), and they could both easily show up.
The predicted nominees: Goldstein, Hunt, Mohammed, Newell, Reiser, Thompson, Yang
The predicted winner: I’m not sure – maybe Goldstein?
